George Franklin Grant: (1846 to 1910)
A passionate golfer, Grant was one of the earliest African American golfers in the post–Civil War era. He built a meadow course next to his home in the country near his home.

On December 12, 1899, he received US patent No. 638,920, the first patent for a wooden golf tee. His tee had a crown resembling today’s modern tee.

Grant entered the Harvard Dental School (now the Harvard School of Dental Medicine) in 1868, and graduated in 1870. He then took a position in the Department of Mechanical Dentistry in 1871, making him Harvard University's first African-American faculty member.
